Syllabus Statement on Ethical Use of AI/ChatGPT

As part of our commitment to fostering a learning environment that encourages critical thinking and responsible technological engagement, West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) recognizes the importance of addressing ethical considerations in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including tools such as ChatGPT. This statement outlines our expectations for the ethical use of AI in academic settings. WGTC’s plagiarism policy prohibits the use of AI-generated content unless noted by the instructor.

Course Overview:

This course may involve the use of AI technologies, including ChatGPT, as tools for enhancing learning experiences and facilitating communication. The responsible and ethical use of these technologies is paramount, and students are expected to engage with them in a manner that aligns with the principles of integrity, fairness, and respect for ethical standards. Individual instructors have the right to allow or disallow the use of AI tools for classroom, lab, homework, and/or testing. Please refer to this syllabus to identify what is allowable for this course. When utilization is allowed, the following expectations apply:

1. Academic Integrity: Students must uphold the principles of academic integrity when using AI tools. Plagiarism, cheating, or any form of dishonesty in the creation of AI-generated content is strictly prohibited.

2. Respect for Diversity: Students should be mindful of the potential biases in AI systems and ensure that their use of ChatGPT and other AI tools does not perpetuate stereotypes or discriminate against any individual or group based on characteristics such as race, gender, ethnicity, or other protected attributes.

3. Transparency and Attribution: When incorporating AI-generated content in assignments or projects, students must clearly indicate its origin. Proper attribution and acknowledgment of AI assistance is essential for academic integrity. Any unauthorized or misuse of AI technology will constitute a violation of the WGTC Academic Integrity Policy and Student Code of Conduct. This may result in disciplinary action.

4. Data Privacy: Students should be aware of and respect privacy considerations when using AI tools. Avoid sharing sensitive personal information or using AI systems in ways that may compromise the privacy of individuals.

5. Ethical Decision-Making: In the context of AI, ethical decision-making is crucial. Students are encouraged to critically assess the impact of AI applications on society, considering factors such as fairness, accountability, and societal implications.

6. Professionalism: Maintain a professional and respectful tone when interacting with AI systems, instructors, and peers. Any misuse, harassment, or inappropriate behavior involving AI tools will not be tolerated.

Consequences:

Failure to follow ethical guidelines may lead to academic repercussions, which may include a “0” for an assignment, up to failure of the course per the student code of conduct and may be reported as integrity violations, in accordance with the Academic Integrity Policy. By enrolling in this course, students commit to using AI technologies responsibly to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.
